12 Weeks of Gifting — Week 11: Fizzy Drinks
With Christmas rapidly approaching, anything I recommend you knit has to be a really quick one, and this week’s special discount pattern certainly is! My Fizzy Drinks pattern creates a set of felted coasters (or a trivet, if you don’t want to cut them) licketey-split.
These are the best, most dependable coasters I own because they are made of felted wool. They’re thick enough to insulate the table from the temperature of what’s on top, whether it’s a cold, fizzy drink or a nice hot cup of tea. They absorb condensation without damage. And since they’ve already been through the wringer, if I spill something on them, it doesn’t matter. I just throw them back in the wash.
I love this pattern so much because it breaks so many knitting rules. You don’t have to weave in *any* ends (not a single one!), you can use lots of different colors (or just two), and at the end you get to seriously mistreat your knitting: put it in hot water, beat it up a little bit, and then CUT IT. If I was ever at risk of being too precious with my knitting, this pattern has saved me from that. (In fact, I had so much fun with it I wrote a whole blog post about it here.)
The only rule you have to pay attention to is the one that says to use non-superwash wool. That one does matter. The Morehouse Farm yarn that I used in the samples felts wonderfully and comes in about a gazillion colors. But you can use any worsted- to aran-weight yarn that isn’t superwash, which makes this an outstanding scrappy project/stashbuster.
The pattern has options for two, four, or ten colors, so you can go pretty crazy with the combinations. I’ve seen these made up in color combinations to fit people’s home decor, or their favorite sports teams or school colors. If pressed I might confess to having four different sets of them in my house at the moment.
Through Saturday, you can save 20% on the Fizzy Drinks pattern at my Ravelry and Payhip shops with code FIZZY20. Enjoy!
