Aunt Patty’s Thumbprint Cookies

A long time ago, I used to have an Aunt Patty. She was one of my favorite aunts (I had a lot of them) — she always seemed to be cheerful and smiling, and she made the very best jam-filled cookies. They were buttery and just the right amount of crumbly, and it seemed like she made them for every family gathering.

My Aunt Patty died a long time ago, when she was much, much too young. She left me with a lot of sweet memories, two wonderful cousins, and this recipe, which I faithfully recreate every year at Christmas.

Patty’s Thumbprint Cookies

Ingredients:

2 sticks butter

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg

2 cups flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Directions:

Cream butter and sugar. Mix egg in well. Add two cups flour, mix together.

Make 1″ balls, press in middle with flour-dipped thumb, and fill with jam or jelly.

Bake 15-20 minutes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
