Come Sail Away With Me

If you don’t already know this about me… my happiest place is by the water. So when the Cephalopod Sisters of Northwest Yarn & Fiber asked me to be the knitting instructor on their August 2024 nautical knitting cruise, you know I said yes!!

We’ll spend three days (August 6-8) sailing the beautiful waters of the Puget Sound in the classic (but roomy) wooden schooner Zodiac, enhancing our knitting skills, looking out for whales and bald eagles, and enjoying a stop to explore Friday Harbor.

In addition to knitting classes, socializing and getting to see the amazing wildlife of the San Juan islands, you’ll also have the opportunity to help raise the sails and learn the ship’s sailing stations. All the food aboard and the knitting classes are included in the price of the cruise.

Our knitting classes will take us on a colorwork voyage.

  • Ladderback Jaquard for Stranded Knitting: Once you add this technique to your knitting toolbox, you may never want to go back to any other method of carrying floats. Easy, seamless, and beautiful, the ladderback jacquard technique will improve the tension of your stranded knitting while allowing you to span much larger areas between stitches. This knitting method adds stretch to the floats while preventing the alternate color from peeking through, and can be applied to nearly any form of stranded knitting. In this class we’ll explore several different options for setting up and resolving ladders, explore best practices for placement and charting, and talk about edge cases like single-row ladders and working with three or more colors. Whether you’re interested in tweaking patterns or developing your own colorwork designs, incorporating this technique means you can design without limits on the space between alternating motifs.
  • A Different Type of Stripe: Helical Knitting: Helical knitting makes it possible to work single-row stripes or stripes with 3, 4, or even more colors without any jogging or noticeable change at the ends of rounds. This neat trick is particularly striking when used on socks, hats, and small-diameter accessories, but scales to any project knit in the round. In this class you’ll learn how to work helically and how to manage your yarn and needles for pleasing results and easy knitting. You’ll even learn how it can make alternating hand-knit skeins a breeze!
  • The Magic of Mosaic: Learn to make striking color patterns in your knitting while working only one color per row. Mosaic knitting is incredibly popular right now, and with good reason. It is simple to learn, but once you’ve mastered the concept, the possibilities for play are limitless. We’ll cover mosaic knitting both flat and in the round, and discuss yarn management and color planning. You’ll learn what makes mosaic charts different from standard knitting charts, and how to read them. You’ll learn the rules of mosaic knitting, and which ones you can break when. You’ll leave this class with the skills and inspiration to tackle any mosaic pattern, or even invent your own!

This cruise always sells out, so if you want to be aboard, register right away!
