Midwinter Cozy Cowlalong
What better way to respond to the cold and dark of the post-holiday times than by creating a warm and quick knit, in the company of friends?
The Midwinter Cozy Cowlalong runs from Feburary 1-22. You can follow along on Facebook (where we have a dedicated page), Ravelry (where we’ll have a dedicated group), and Instagram (where we’ll use the hashtag #CozyCowlalong).
We’ll have two Zoom sessions, which are optional but always fun: A Kickoff/Cast-On party on Wednesday, February 1 from 5-7pm Pacific / 8-10pm Eastern (this is the Zoom link to join), and a Wrap Party on Wednesday, February 22 from 5-7pm Pacific / 8-10pm Eastern (this is the Zoom link to join). There will be prizes, of course! (More about those later.)
This knitalong, like last summer’s Super Summer Shawlalong, will give you several patterns to choose from. You can knit any of my cowl patterns for this event, which means you can choose whether you want to take on something simple or complex, large or small. With so many options, there should be something for everyone.
Patterns
There are eight different patterns to choose from. Some will teach you a new technique. Most of them have instructions for changing sizes, so you might decide to go for an infinity cowl, or a really tall one. And some of them are such quick knits that I bet some of you will want to knit more than one. Go ahead! More finished objects means more prize opportunities for you.
Pacifica
Pacifica is a brioche cowl that’s knit sideways, then grafted together for a seamless finish. It’s a great way to practice those brioche increases and decreases, and it includes a tutorial for brioche grafting if you’re up for something chewy, or you can choose to work a simpler 3-needle bindoff.
Perseveration
Perseveration is a large bandana-shaped cowl that plays with mitered squares and color blocking in an unusual way. Like many of my patterns, it looks difficult but is actually quite simple to work.
Dinkins Bayou
Got stash? Dinkins Bayou is a great scrappy project. It utilizes both Roosamine and dip stitches to create its motifs, so by making this cowl you’ll be learning not one, but two new techniques. They’re both straightforward, and both are explained in the pattern.
Glenborough
Glenborough uses elongated stitches to create something that looks like plaid, but isn’t. You’ll use an improved I-cord cast-on and bind-off along the way (with tutorials, of course!).
Shattered Shale
Shattered Shale uses a two-color woven slip stitch in an easily memorizable four-row pattern with clever details like a jogless join. Narrow or long or infinity-sized, this is one of my favorites.
Powderbowl
Like a fresh snowscape, Powderbowl invites you to jump right in! Choose three of your favorite colors and watch the simple stitchwork shine.
Woodleaf
Woodleaf’s vine-and-leaves pattern is charted as well as written, which makes it accessible no matter what your preference.
BriLicious
My original, simple, “learning brioche” cowl, BriLicious, is an easy toe-dip into two-color brioche.
Pâte à Choux
Ready to take a deeper dive into two-color brioche? Pâte à Choux introduces syncopation in this larger shoulder cozy. It’s a little big for a cowl, but it’s almost a cowl, so I’m calling it fair game for this knitalong.
Yarn
There will be a few special offers from our yarn partners:
Morehouse Farm is offering free shipping to all participants through 2/28/23 with code DEVIOUS. I’d recommend grabbing a few skeins of their 100% Merino 3-Strand Worsted, which is the perfect yarn for so many of these cowls.
Prizes
Of course there will be prizes. More later on exactly what they are, but for now you’ll want to know how to enter to win them, right?
Every post in our Cozy Cowlalong Facebook and Ravelry group, or Instagram post with the #CozyCowlalong hashtag, will be an entry to win a Participants Prize. And every finished cowl you post will be an entry for the Finishers Prize. I’ll announce the winners at our Wrap Party, but you don’t need to be present to win.
