Pride Like the Wind

As you know, I release a Pride fundraising pattern every year in June. Last fall I was at a show where I met Heather and Danielle of Purly Shell Fiber Arts and learned that they, too, do a Pride month fundraiser with their yarn. My immediate response was, “I want to get in on that with you!!”

We shared some of our history with each other and talked about why Pride and the Trevor Project in particular are important to each of us. This shawl is the result of that collaboration.

In addition to being rainbow-based, this mini skein collection includes colorways representing the Trans and BIPOC sections of the Pride Inclusivity flag. I was curious to see how the yarns would incorporate all these colors, plus a contrast skein, in a harmonious way, and I have to say that when the skeins showed up I was completely wowed.

A large skein of speckled rainbow yarn with smaller mini skeins in front of it in rainbow colors.

Of course such a fabulous dye job called for a pattern that would show off the yarns in an equally wonderful way. We all agreed that a triangular shawl would be the way to go. Beyond that, I wanted to find a way to let the speckles and color shifts in each yarn show. I played around until I found a background stitch that did that. I’m so happy with the stitch I used: It makes me think of shells and waves, which is the perfect reflection of Purly Shell’s location on the Washington coast.

The resulting shawl is one that I think honors the feeling of the Inclusivity Flag while also showing off the beautiful qualities of the yarn. I hope you agree, and that you’ll want to knit this pattern, to show your own pride, or perhaps in honor of someone you love, or to show your allyship to the world. You never know who needs to see it.

If you order the full kit from Purly Shell‘s website it will include the pattern, and they’ll make a $15 donation to the Trevor Project.

Or you can purchase the standalone pattern on my Ravelry or Payhip shops. Proceeds from this pattern sale this month will be split between the Trevor Project, the Human Rights Campaign, and Knit the Rainbow. If you won’t be knitting, you can still make a difference by donating directly to one of those organizations through the links above.
